Thai Basil Fried Rice
Craving a flavorful twist on traditional fried rice? Our Thai Basil Fried Rice recipe is here to delight your taste buds! Unlike Pad Kra Pao, this dish is versatile with basil choices—you can use Thai Holy Basil, Thai Basil, or even regular sweet basil. Any of these options will infuse your meal with aromatic goodness and authentic Thai flavors.
Ingredients You’ll Need for this Fried Rice
Fortunately, you can find most of the ingredients you need at mainstream grocery stores. Additionally, sauces you may have never used before, like dark or black soy sauce for adding color, are available online or can be omitted. For Thai chilies, pickled versions are available online, but I encourage you to visit a nearby Asian store because Thai chilies freeze very well.
How to Customize this Fried Rice
- Switch your choice of protein from ground chicken to shrimp, thinly sliced steak, pork, or chicken breast.
- Use Thai chili jam or Thai chili paste instead of sugar will slightly change the aroma of the dish. It is nice in a different way.
- Pick your favorite basil from Thai, Holy or Tulsi, or sweet basil. In this recipe, I choose Holy Basil. Please, see the video below for different types of basil.
- If you don’t like bell pepper, leave it out or add some diced onion instead.
Things You Can Prepare Ahead of Time
It is best to use cold, cooked rice for making fried rice. In other words, using leftover rice is ideal. Moreover, you can make the sauce and store it in a jar. It will stay good in the fridge for up to a year. This sauce mix is also great for other stir-fries, such as beef broccoli,Pad Kra Pao, and Pad Kee Mao.

Thai Basil Fried Rice
Ingredients
For the Fried Rice
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil
- 3 cups rice (cold cooked rice)
- 7-8 cloves garlic
- 3 Thai chilies
- 1 lb ground chicken
- 1 bell pepper (diced)
- 1 cup basil (Thai, Holy basil, or regular sweet basil)
For the Stir Fry Sauce
- 3 tbsp oyster sauce
- 1 tbsp fish sauce
- 1½ tbsp soy sauce (or seasoning sauce like Maggi is better for the dish.)
- 1½ tsp sugar
- 2 tsp dark soy sauce (optional)
Instructions
Mix the Sauce.
- Combine the ingredients from the sauce mixed above. Whisk together to combine. Set it aside.
Fry Eggs
- In a hot wok or skillet over medium heat, add oil and fry one egg at a time, then set aside. For Thai-style fried eggs, add the egg white to the hot oil for 30 seconds, then add the yolk for another 30 seconds. This will give you sunny-side-up eggs with crispy lace around the egg white. Set the eggs aside.
Assemble the Fried Rice
- In the same wok or pan, using the leftover vegetable oil from frying the eggs, sauté the garlic and chili for about 30 seconds. Then add the ground chicken and half of the stir-fry sauce from earlier to season.
- Once the chicken is cooked through, add the diced bell pepper and continue to stir-fry. Keep stir-frying until the mixture is fairly dry.
- Add the cold, cooked rice and the rest of the stir-fry sauce. Stir-fry everything together until well combined and the rice is dry.
- Let the rice char in the wok for a minute then turn off the heat. Add the basil and stir-fry everything together again.
- Serve the basil fried rice warm and top with fried egg. Enjoy!
