Southern Fried Apples Ingredients

Instead of using butter like many Southern recipes, I fry the apples in bacon fat. As the bacon crisps up, scoop out half of the fat, leaving just the right amount to cook the apples perfectly. For this dish, choose apples that are both tart and sweet, like Honeycrisp, Pink Lady, or Granny Smith. In our family, Honeycrisp is the top choice for this recipe, as well as for cruffins and pies.

Simple Steps to Cook Bacon and Apples

First, I want to give credit where it’s due. I came across Kamala Harris’s cooking video on TikTok and YouTube and that was the first time hearing about the dish. I followed her method but left out the alcohol. In fact, this recipe is nearly identical to the filling I use for my apple cinnamon cruffins, with the addition of bacon as a flavorful twist!

To begin, cook the bacon in a skillet over medium heat until it is crispy. Remove the bacon from the skillet and set it aside on a paper towel to drain. Scoop half the fat out and leave the rest to fry apples.

Next, Add the diced apples and sprinkle a little bit of lemon juice. Then cook apples for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally until they are softened. The lemon juice helps the apples not to turn brown quickly, especially if you prepare them before cooking everything. It also increase the freshness of the dish.

Finally, add the crispy bacon back to the skillet. Stir everything together until well combined.
